You don’t have to go far for a winter getaway. Morris is a hidden gem tucked away in western Minnesota— a small town with no shortage of things to do!
To help you narrow down your schedule, here are a few must-sees to add to the list:
Explore the Trails
Morris is home to over 53,000 acres of federal land dedicated to wildlife and outdoor recreation. Formed by retreating glaciers, the Morris Wetland Management District is dedicated to restoring and protecting waterfowl. That means it’s home to beautiful birds and scenic tallgrass prairie.
Warm up with some Comfort Food
A local favorite is Don’s Cafe, known for its fresh-baked bread. The mainstay even won WCCO-TV’s viewer’s choice award for “Best Grilled Cheese” back in 2013. If you’re not in the mood, try Italian food at Bello Cucina or Mexican food at Mi Mexico among the dozen or so restaurants in the region.
Go Ice Skating
Hockey is a perfectly wintry way to get your heart pumping. Morris’s Lee Community Center, located at 101 S. County Rd 22, offers open skating and open hockey.
Catch Some Fish
You can fish year-round on any one of nine Morris-area lakes. Just be sure to read into the Minnesota fishing seasons and regulations before you go (and don’t forget to pick up live bait at Jerry’s U-Save or Morris Coop).
The Morris area, with its wetlands and grasslands, is a premier region for pheasant hunting. It’s also home to waterfowl, turkey, deer, and other game species and a local rifle club. Check up on the state’s hunting regulations before you head out.
Catch a Movie
If it’s just too cold to be outside, stop into the cozy Morris Theatre. Back in 2013, Morris residents banded together to save the historic building, which is now a local favorite. Since then, it’s been run as a co-operative that community members help support. Movie-goers reap the benefits, and the screen plays first-run favorites, like the newest Star Wars film.
Cheer on the Hometown Team
Morris is home to the University of Minnesota-Morris, a public liberal arts college with over 1,800 students and 17 sports teams. This winter, you can catch a high-energy men’s or women’s basketball game, or cheer on the school’s swimmers and divers.
Whether you stay inside or explore the outdoors this winter, Morris has something for you. Visit morrismntourism.com to plan your vacation.
